The Memoir Coach Blog

The joy of a well planned day…

My friend DD asked me a few months ago to look at my calendar and find a day where we could go to the Palm Springs Follies together.  I checked my days and we decided on Tuesday, February 21st.  The day arrived and DD picked me up promptly at 12:30 so we could make the 1:30 pm show.  The show was great and we had a fantastic time.  It was great to see the honor they pay to the military at the end of the show and DD was honored for her service in the Navy.

Our next activity was a dinner reservation at one of our favorite restaurants in Palm Springs called Daveys.  What makes Daveys so special is the piano player, Paula.  She is performing there Tuesday – Thursday and also on Sunday evenings.  She is worth a trip to Daveys.  We had the best time sitting right near the piano requesting songs and spending time with her.

The beauty of the music permeates the room and her sweet soulful voice goes deep into your soul.  I love when I have a day just like today…my heart feels happy!  So today in  your writing think about what are those things you need to take in to make your soul feel happy and satisfied.

MY FIRST JOB                                                      FEBRUARY 20, 2012

During my softball career back in the late 1930’s, I was with the Orange Lionettes, based in the City ofOrangein theCountyofOrange, in  the State ofCalifornia. (Remember, I’m anOrangeCountykind-of-gal, through and through.) The team was sponsored by the Lions Club whose members were local business men.  One was a Doctor who had to take me to his office after the game to dig the little rocks embedded — O-O-O-W — in my left upper thigh when I had slid in home to win the ball game. Then there was Ray who was the Sports writer for the Orange Gazette who would give me his 2 tickets in the journalist’s section at the Coliseum for UCLA football home games — he must’ve been a USC fan.  Then there was Elwood and his wife, Vera, who gave the pitcher and me a job for the summer in their Laundry and Dry Cleaning business.

I regress a moment to say that during the previous summer, several of these sponsors sent Terry and me to the Santa Ana Business School where we were introduced to basic accounting, secretarial procedures, some typing, all the stuff going on in an office, a bank, or even a bar. We also learned how to write checks and keep track of them, and balance the check register.  I loved this schooling,  however I don’t think Terry paid too much attention.  All she did was sit there and twirl a pencil, and get me to give her all the answers.

To continue, Elwood and Vera were a wonderful, hard-working couple who had built their business from out of nothing — Very dedicated to squirreling away for their future retirement. Vera was like the permanent chaperone for the team, and Elwood was the guy to turn to if you needed a helping hand.

Since Terry was fromWest LA, Vera had her stay with them through the summer so she could take the job.  They had a huge apartment right in the center ofOrangewhere the circle is — the hub of the City. They put up many of the ballplayers throughout the years. So Terry was set for a place to stay, and I was still over inFullerton, and had a little 1932 Ford Model B Coupe with a nice tan paint job and red spoke wheels, so I had my transportation, courtesy of Aunt Mae, of course.

First day, there we were, all excited about our jobs to make an “honest buck,” and we were given our assignments:  Terry was placed at the back of the laundry, at the alley entrance, in Receiving where the bundles of dirty clothing and linens came in and had to be sorted and marked.  Terry was a free spirit which probably explains the fact the Business School curriculum had not penetrated her psyche too much, and would be relegated to jobs using her strength of the body, but not the mind.  Remember me telling the story  about our little group of softball players that I organized to contribute to the World War II effort, and we went off in 1946 to Douglas Aircraft where we were snapped up to work in a flash? — and Terry was given a riveter job — while I, because of the attention I paid in the Business School was given a cushy, easy job as a Departmental Clerk, and because they thought I could type 80 words per minute. (I guess I fooled them!) Or maybe they just hoped I could type 10 WPM to fill in a few forms now and then.

It turned out my “position” at the Laundry and Dry Cleaning establishment was up front on the street side in the office assisting Vera. Our duties there were receiving bundles from individual customers, or passing their cleaned items back to them and taking their money. I had learned at theBusinessSchoolabout making change in a business-like manner. We also had to make up the statements for the credit customers such as motels, restaurants, etc.  so we had a typewriter for that, and we had a cash drawer. Learning about the cash drawer helped me in my later endeavors owning bars and a liquor store.

Elwood took care of the back end of the business.  He had a panel truck to pick up and deliver the soiled or clean linens to the various motels or restaurants, so Terry learned that end of the business from shorts to sheets.

We toiled away all that summer from 8 am to 4 pm, usually, Monday through Friday — with Terry in the soiled department, and I up front in the office behind the counter, making change, typing a few statements, dilly-dallying, and shooting the breeze with the walk-in customers — usually going over the last game we had played.  Almost everyone inOrangewent to our games one time or another.  Of course we had the fans that never missed a game.  We were famous World Champions, and in the newspapers fromFresnotoDetroit,PhoenixtoPortland, and throw inSan Antonio— all over theU.S.  However, I don’t think they ran anything in theMainepapers.

I was so proud on the first payday when Elwood handed me my first check — Vera was the business end and had made it out.  I looked in awe to read the amount:  $13.76.  It was like a million bucks to me just thinking about having worked for it — a whole 5 days!  I would cash my check each week, get into my car, drive home, and the first thing I did when I arrived home was to hand my Mother a 5 dollar bill.  I know it pleased her because then she would have a little more “pin money”  to use when the Jewel Tea salesman showed up and she could buy more pots, or dishes, or hair brushes from him and which she paid him 25¢ a week on account till paid for. (See my blog for June 20, 2011 titled “Pots and Pans & Other Stuff.”)

The balance left was spent filling my gas tank with gas at about 18¢ per gallon, then I had plenty of cash ($8.76) left over to see a movie, or go to a drive-in, or I might go see Aunt Mae for the weekend — saved $$ going there because there was plenty of good food, and I could fill my gas tank from the ranch gas tank.  Or I would just enjoy my Saturday and Sunday tooling around visiting friends and relatives.  Or maybe there was a game to be played.

Whatever— After all, I had to have some R & R on my days off!     What a life!

Finding Deep Strength

When we look back on our lives we see that we have survived many trials and often to our own amazement.

We have all faced moments in our lives when the pressure mounts beyond what we feel we can handle, and we find ourselves thinking that we do not have the strength to carry on. Sometimes we have just gotten through a major obstacle or illness only to find another one waiting for us the moment we finally catch our breath. Sometimes we endure one loss after another, wondering when we will get a break from life’s travails. It does not seem fair or right that life should demand more of us when we feel we have given all we can, but sometimes this is the way life works.

When we look back on our lives, we see that we have survived many trials and surmounted many obstacles, often to our own amazement. In each of those instances, we had to break through our ideas about how much we can handle and go deeper into our hidden reserves. The thought that we do not have the strength to handle what is before us can be likened to the hard surface of a frozen lake. It appears to be an impenetrable fact, but when we break through it, we find that a deep well of energy and inspiration was trapped beneath that icy barrier the whole time. Sometimes we break through by cutting a hole into our resistance with our willpower, and sometimes we melt the ice with compassion for our predicament and ourselves. Either way, each time we break through, we reach a new understanding of the strength we store within ourselves.

When we find ourselves up against that frozen barrier of thinking we cannot handle our situation, we may find that the kindest choice is to love ourselves and our resistance too. We can simply accept that we are overwhelmed, exhausted, and stretched, and we can offer ourselves loving kindness and compassion. If we can extend to ourselves the unconditional warmth of a mother’s love, before we know it, the ice will begin to break.

Take the time to reflect…

On one of my favorite runs I run through the Las Palmas neighborhood in Palm Springs.  The hills are great and the views magnificient.  I love to stop and reflect at the small cemetery right across from Temple Isaiah.  As I stop and sit near the tree I reflect on the tombstones that surround me.  I wonder who these people were while they were alive.  Some tombstones say simple one word descriptions such as mother, wife, architect…

But when we spend time reflecting on our lives how would we describe ourselves?  In my Legacy Classes, session one is really all about exploring who we really are.  What are those things that make our hearts sing.  The best way to reflect is to find a quiet space and spend some time pondering who you are and what are those things that make you uniquely you.

GRADUATION IN FEBRUARY?                                            FEBRUARY 13, 2012

We had a Graduation last Friday the 10th, and I thought that all of you out there might want to hear about it.  There were 4 of us who have just completed our studies in the MASTERS SERIES — Jan, Diana, Dorothy, and I.

It seemed odd to graduate in February.  I’m from the very old school days (very, very old, in fact)  when graduation time was in June.  We always had a prom, and then after the afternoon of Graduation day, a gang of us would go off to Hollywood and hit the Palladium where there would always be one of the Big Bands performing — and we’d dance the night away.  Talk about Heaven, well, we thought we were in it!

I missed the caps and gowns.  Another thing I missed was having a Valedictorian who would have an inspiring speech for us to help forge our futures.  If we had a Valedictorian the other day, I imagine it would’ve been Diana — she was ALWAYS the one to have her assignments ready to be read the very first moment class convened.

After a long stretch of musing over this matter, I decided the Coach’s form for Graduation was probably better than the old days after all.

I know I would not be able to dance the night away.    That’s for sure!

Each of us “grads” had a little something to say before we were given our  walking  Graduation papers,  and the following page contains my words of wisdom.

—————————————————————————————————-SERIOUSLY,  TLC’s Writing Workshop has given me a whole new lease on life. I love Tammy for that.

IS THIS A NEW CAREER?                                                          FEBRUARY 10, 2012

Here I am in my life at another crossroads of which there have been many.  You know, it was in late 2010 that I graduated — and I didn’t even want to — from Tammy’s LEGACY SERIES.  That’s the one she told me to start with Session 2,  don’t bother with Session 1,  so I went merrily on my way attending all the other classes regularly, and pretty soon our esteemed writing coach announced to me that now I must take Session 1 before I could graduate.  I was getting confused by this time, and when she made me take Session 1 about 3 times I was even more confused. It was a good thing I didn’t have to keep paying for the space I was taking up in these classes.  So Prof. Coia finally let me slip through the cracks.

Then it was time to enroll in the MASTERS SERIES, and I was beginning to get the hang of it, and Miss TLC had me start in the very first Session, and everything went along just fine, except I did ditch a couple of classes which made me a little fearful that she would pull something, and make me wait to graduate because of the truancy plus I failed to turn in a couple of assignments, or she would have me make them up, and I would have to do them 3 times.

But here we are poised to graduate from the MASTERS SERIES, and I am so proud to be a member of this class.  One of the reasons for wanting this is because Coach has me doing blog thing “Mondays with Melitas” on her web site.  I love doing it, and I want to thank all my friends and faithful readers for hanging in there and posting their comments. Keep those clever comments coming — that is half the fun.

And Tammy, thanks for putting up with me.              MELITAS FORSTER

The gift of running…

This morning I just completed the Palm Springs Half Marathon.  The weather conditions were gorgeous and I was ready!  This was my 2nd half marathon, I ran with my daughter in Arizona a month ago.

A few days before this race I tweeked my back so I wasn’t sure how I was going to do time-wise today.  Last month I finished in 2:51 minutes, today I beat my time by 16 minutes finishing at 2:35 minutes!

I owe my new love for running to Alba, my coach.  She is right here with me to the right.  It was Alba that encouraged me to try running since she used to be a marathon runner when she was younger.

I shared before that I have never been much of a runner and when I began training last August, I could barely run a mile and I hated it with each step I ran.  I finally found myself running 3 miles non-stop, and now when I go out for a short run, I rarely do under 5 miles.  With Alba’s inspiration I have found myself hooked on running.  My next goal that I am setting for myself is that I would like to run a few more half marathons this year and next year be ready for the LA Marathon…26 miles baby!

Pictures spark our memories…

I came across this picture not too long ago…amazing how time flies by… I love seeing pictures of my children when they were younger and then as they have grown.  Pictures have a way to bring us closer to those we love.  We can engage in our writing and bring it to a newer level when we bring our pictures into focus.

Relax in the present…

Relax.  Tranquilo.  However you want to say it…how can you be more in the present?  One of my life lessons that I want to learn and keep learning is to be more present and more alive!  I want to enjoy each day and one way to do that is in your writing.  What are you observing today?  How are you recording your journey?  Being in the present means being fully alive and alert.

What are the things that make you feel alive?  I love feeling the sunshine on my back.  I love running through the hills of Palm Springs.  I love snuggling with Courtney.  I love laying by a fireplace and reading a great book.  I love being alive!
